About the Artist

Biography

Art was something Jose always had a knack for, but as a first-generation American, he was brought up believing the arts were a luxury for more affluent idle hands to pursue. Mr. Guerrero wound up shutting down that creative side of him for ten years as he served his tour of duty in the US military. That military service has become a badge of honor and a shield against those who would say something to the effect of “You don’t like how things are? Then go back to your country!” His service-connected disability is a testament that he gave more to be part of this country than most of these bigoted individuals.

After being honorably discharged, going to college, and leaving Fresno State with his BA in Graphic Design, Jose went back into serving to better the community by working for a disability rights non-profit for ten years before leaving to pursue his art career at a slightly higher tempo.

Jose is influenced by the art styles of low-brow/pop-surrealist artists like Ed Roth and Todd Schorr. Art activists like Banksy and Shepard Fairey influence Jose’s vision for his art to affect the world around him.

Artist Statement

Not just an artist seeking to inspire; I’m looking to empower. I don’t create pieces that are easy to make money on, nor do I aspire to adorn mahogany mantles in fancy mansions. My raw art style often focuses on heavy topics which aren’t for the faint of heart. While it’s challenging to keep up with the day-to-day expenses, I am in the fortunate position to create art without worrying about sales or commissions thus allowing me stick to my convictions.
